Recreational Ice Diver
An SDI Ice Diving Course gives divers the chance to experience the underwater world when it’s at its most peaceful and untouched. You’ll learn how to safely dive beneath a solid ice cover, work with a topside support team, manage specialized equipment, and handle tethered dive procedures. It’s a great way to build confidence, expand your skills, and explore a side of diving most people never get to see.

Course Description
Ice diving can be a serene and beautiful aspect of scuba diving. As a winter activity, ice diving offers the opportunity to enjoy sport diving year round. Diving under ice presents hazards not common to the open water diver, and special training is required. The purpose of this course is to acquaint the diver with the hazards associated with ice diving, as well as how to plan and execute an ice dive.
Who Can Enroll?
As long as you are 18 years or older, are a certified open water scuba diver and have logged a minimum of 50 dives in a variety of conditions, you are eligiblet to enroll in our ice diving specialty course.
What's Included?
Your class fee will cover your pool training, SDI training materials, your Instructors and Dive Master, and SDI Ice Diver Specialty certification.
Student Provides
Students will provide their own diving equipment. Students are encouraged to utilize dry suits and be familiar with their use. The instructor shall initially assist the student in checking all student gear to ensure it is adequate and in proper working order.
Open Water Dives
A minimum of 2 open water dives with your instructor are required.
You will need to provide your own transportation, rental equipment, environmental suit and accommodations. Rental equipment is available through Diver’s World. Many of our local dives are within a couple of hours drive (or right here in our own Lake Erie or Presque Isle Bay) and classmates frequently arrange for travel together.
